Priorities for residents and foreign visitors are clean, safe, and less congested streets. Followed by affordable housing and green spaces. All these other plans will be mere cosmetics, unless the UDA and other regulatory authorities combine to: (a) get rid of the garbage lying on public roads (just look at the Kollupitiya side of the Marine Drive, especially the sea-side); (b) monitor air quality in the city and reduce the current high levels of particulates; (c) Stop allowing high-rise building on the sea-side of the Galle Road, which reduce the sea-breeze into the city and raise the average temperatures, thus leading to more mosquito-borne diseases; and (d) reduce vehicular traffic in the city by improving the rail network and introducing a tax of single drivers in large vehicles. We also need more more pedestrian crossings with working lights; and hoardings in front of trees and beautiful buildings should not be allowed.
